Square nuts remain a fundamental component in fastening systems where large surface area contact and enhanced grip are required. Characterized by their four-sided geometry, square nuts offer greater resistance to loosening under pressure compared to hex nuts, especially when paired with flat washers or in blind-hole applications.
These nuts are commonly produced in Grade 2, Grade 5, and Grade 8 carbon steel, with finishes ranging from plain (self-colored) to zinc-plated, hot-dip galvanized, and black oxide coatings to enhance corrosion resistance. In environments demanding superior anti-corrosion performance, A2-70 or A4-80 stainless steel square nuts compliant with DIN 557, DIN 562, or ASME B18.2.2 are widely utilized.
The square shape ensures improved tool engagement and torque transfer, especially when manual fastening or retrofitting is involved. Common sizes range from M5 to M20 or 1/4″-20 to 3/4″-10, with coarse and fine thread variants available.
